So, I'm going to be pretty bored this summer. Work only occupies 20 hours of my week and its pretty much the dullest place on the planet.
One of my laptops is on the edge of dying and so I figured maybe I can use him to build some sort of machine to drive this jukebox. If possible, I would like to use his screen (if it magically fixes itself) as the viewer. Needless to say, some planning is involved here.
This project stems from my original fantasy of having a carputer. The jukebox is something that seems like it could be cheaper and easier to build.
Already withing a few minutes of thinking about it, I've thought of about 50 problems with this idea but i'm sure they will tend to iron themselves out.
So. This is what the list of parts looks like right now.
1. Laptop or really tiny machine with wireless. (perhaps VIA)
2. Flat screen if cheap enough.
3. Really good speaker system.
4. Some metal sheets and someone who has material to bend it. ( No i'm not doing it myself because i'm incapable of doing it and also need my fingers)
5. Giant drive for really tiny machine ( because i have no giant drives)
6. Parts to build infrared sensor to control jukebox with remote control
Thats already a pretty decent list. I hope it doesnt go much past that.
I'll put up some more info as soon as this idea marinates for a while.
Update! Instead of a really good speaker system. I'm planning to maybe use some car speakers. Perhaps a nice set of 6x9's and maybe some 5.25' and tweeters if possible. If space allows, I would like to add a nasty subwoofer as well but that all depends on the amp. Also, instead of metal, I'm planning to make it out of wood. Maybe some birch or something nicer. I think wood is the way to go! Thats all for now.
Here is a rough sketch made in PS of how I eventually want it to look.

Update! The more I think about this project, The dumber i think it is. Its not because its a jukebox but because its made of wood i think and it may very well look like an old ass radio. So i'm not sure what to do here. Maybe i'll build it anway and see how it goes.
Anyone have a 12" LCD they want to sell to me?
Hmm, I'm thinking now that maybe I could make it out of clear plastic.
something I can hella glue together. Who knows.
bah! bah!
Update! 5.28I've finally started drawing out schematics for the jukebox. So far it needs:
21 push buttons
1 I-Pac encoder
1 PC incl. LCD Display
Lots of wood.
I think if this project goes smoothly, I might expand it to more than what this description entails. Maybe its own site.
Oh I also thought of a good name for it!
GROOVEBOX!
Update 6.5I've got mp3 playback working in java now. Now, to start building the gui interface for it and then to start purchasing parts. Even if i dont get this project done. The gui will be built and that is enough for me for now until i can afford all the parts to build it properly.
